Micafungin


Formerly known as FK463, micafungin is a novel antifungal agent under investigation. It is a glucan synthesis inhibitor of the echinocandin structural class. It is being developed by Fujisawa Healthcare Inc. for intravenous use and is currently in clinical trials. Its trade name has not been announced.

Usual Doses
Available data are very limited. micafungin infusion at a dose of 50 mg/day for at least 10 days has been 100% effective in adult patients with HIV infection and esophageal candidiasis. Typical doses for micafungin are not yet known.

Prophylactic use of micafungin at a dose of up to 200 mg/day has been found to be well-tolerated in patients receiving bone marrow or peripheral stem cell transplant. At this dose, effective serum concentrations could be achieved.

Side-Effects
Results of the clinical trials have not yet been reported.

Severe diarrhea and dehydration have been observed in a single case among patients with HIV infection and esophageal candidiasis who were treated with micafungin. The relationship of these side-effects to micafungin is not at all certain.
